WH Book review (Chapter 1~3)
After the winter holiday started, I started to read a book called" Heart of a Samurai". The reason why I read this book was because it was sent to me by my English tution as my winter holiday homework. As I counted on, there were 41 chapters in total, so I chose to read a part of it from chapters 1~ 3. In order to understand the main plot of the story, I started to read from the summary at the back cover. By looking at it, I estimated that the story is about 5 japanese fishermans trying to reach to their home country after their boats have flown away to an oversea contry. At that time in Japan, it was said that the country's borders were closed and people who comes from oversea will dennfinetly be killed wether or not that person is Japanese or not. Additionaly, japanese at that time were told that foreigners were demons and barbarians who had tremendous scary blue eyes. Through reading the summary, I was honestly very intered in reading this book.
In chapter 1~3, 5 japanese fisherman named Manjiro (protagonist), Denzo, Jusuke, Toraemon, and Goemon went fishing on thier boat, however they got caught in a storm and got flown away by the sea current (kuroshio) resulting in them to reach an uninhabited island after several days. Upon reaching the island, the 5 fisherman went on trying to catch fish and birds to fill up their feeling of hunger. As day went by, they gradually became sick of eating fish and bird everyday and started losing hope to survive bit by bit. However, one day, one large American whaling vessel passed by the uninhabited island and helped Manjiro and the the others to get onboard. To a suprise, every japanese fisherman were suprised to see their first ever look of a foreigner! Will they be killed, saved or taken back to their home country?! I will be continuing reading from here next time. (12/29)
